Employment experts in the media jobs field and others will tell you that appearance counts. Once you CV gets you trough the first round of elimination process, you can be assured that you probably have the skills and experience the employer wants or that they believe you are a good candidate for lateral job movement.

Now its time to sell you. Not your skills, education or talents, just you. In advertising jobs especially, where the idea is to polish a product and market it, your personal marketing is being checked even closer than the marketing skills listed on your CV.

Think of yourself as a brand. Employers want to see your core values, which you show them through appearance, behavior and communication skills. Psychologists have said that just 10% of the impression you make at job interviews will be based on what you say. The rest will depend on how you said it and if you appeared like a convincing candidate.

Dressing for the job you aspire to win and the people interviewing you will picture you in the role. When you research the new job that you want, work the clothes you need to wear into the picture. Researching exactly what the advertising jobs duties entail will dictate the level of dress. If the position involves going out to client meetings, then dress as though you could confidently bring in new business.
